The Village at Houser's Crossing is a haven for those who have a passion for the rails. Imagine sipping your morning coffee or tea on your private porch as a massive, roaring locomotive glide by the crossing. At The Village, you have the unique opportunity to witness these engineering marvels up close and personal. Our private train viewing area ensures that you get a front-row seat to the show, capturing the sheer power and beauty of these magnificent machines.
The Village at Houser's Crossing is strategically located near a prominent railway line, making it the ideal base camp for train enthusiasts. From the moment you arrive, you'll hear the distant rumble of locomotives, setting the tone for an unforgettable experience.
Located right on the Reading, Blue Mountain, and Northern’s Reading Line (Passenger Train Rides - Reading Blue Mountain & Northern (rbmnrr-passenger.com), just south of the Tamaqua yard. The Tamaqua yard is the source of plenty of action with many local freight trains originating there, including the QAMC mountain job, and the QASD Shenandoah turn. You will also see all the RBMN’s mainline freights pass through the front yard, with the NRFF, WHFF, and QANR making their daily appearances. You will also be located near the RBMN’s headquarters in Port Clinton, a short 20-minute drive away. Here you can view some of the local yard switchers along with the steam and diesel shops, where rail-fans are welcome to safely and courteously explore the grounds.
In addition to all the freight train action, you will also be in close proximity to ride on many of the RBMN’s passenger trains. The Village at Houser’s Crossing is located less than 15 minutes from Jim Thorpe, home to The Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railroad (Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway | Train Rides in Jim Thorpe, PA (lgsry.com). The LGSR runs daily excursion trains from Jim Thorpe into the Lehigh Gorge State Park. Usually powered by handsomely painted RBMN GP38-2 or SD40-2 locomotives, they are a treat for rail-fans both looking to ride or photograph their operations.
Additionally, the LGSR operates bike trains from Jim Thorpe to White Haven, allowing you to ride the full length of the Gorge parallel to the very active tracks, with your personal bike or a rented bike provided by the railroad.
Beyond Jim Thorpe, you are also located less than an hour from Reading Outer Station, home to the RBMN’s Iron Horse Rambles, powered by the beautifully restored Reading T-1 2102 steam locomotive. In the fall they provide additional excursions powered by their diesel F-Units. These trains also pass the Village at Houser’s Crossing, so if you do not feel like riding, enjoy a beverage on the porch and wait for them to roll by. There is plenty to keep any kind of rail-fan busy, seven days a week!

Throughout the year, the area hosts a variety of train-themed events and exhibitions. From model train displays to guest lectures by railroad historians, there's always something happening to cater to your passion for trains.
